What to know before you decide

01

Business ownership

An independent advisor serves travelers under contracts and applicable law. A host may offer supplier access, technology, training and commission processing; that does not necessarily make it an employer.

02

Review the contract

Compare commission splits, ongoing fees, supplier credentials, termination terms and chargebacks in writing.

03

Client ownership

Ask who controls customer records, branding, marketing permissions and bookings if the relationship ends.

04

Decision checklist: compare like for like

Request a current written agreement and an itemized fee schedule from each prospective host. Compare enrollment fees, monthly subscriptions, technology costs, training access, commission sharing, cancellation reversals, payment timing, supplier access, and any restrictions on operating your own brand. Calculate what remains from a hypothetical eligible commission after each host's split and fixed costs. A larger advertised commission percentage does not necessarily produce greater net income if the accompanying expenses are higher.

05

Questions before signing

Ask whether you are an employee or independent contractor, which entity is the seller of record, whether professional liability protection exists, and which legal registrations are your responsibility. Confirm ownership of domain names, marketing accounts, client contact records, and repeat bookings. Get an explanation of what happens to unpaid commissions, existing reservations, and customer records if you leave. Do not assume a host agreement guarantees clients or satisfies every jurisdiction's seller-of-travel requirements.

Questions people ask

Are host agencies employers?

Not necessarily. Many relationships are independent-contractor arrangements.

Are clients guaranteed?
